This self-winding lantern by HABA is possibly a little better in theory than in practice. If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile you’ll know I have mixed feelings about HABA. They are often marketed as an eco-friendly company, and certainly, their name comes up readily on lists of products that are environmentally thoughtful. Sadly though, I find that so many of their products are actually made from plastic (and non-recycled at that). This lantern is no exception.
Made mostly from plastic (as is most of the outdoor Terra Kids range), the self-winding lever is stiff to use and too short for little hands. The mechanism does not last very long, so my girls very quickly tired of this lantern, and prefer to use their self-winding torches, or simply a regular torch when we go on our meditation walks at night in winter.
While I will admit the compass on the top is a neat idea, I think we’d have been better off with an actual compass and an actual torch!
If you’re looking for ideas for your wild child to get them into the great outdoors this Christmas, I recommend you keep looking!
